EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MASTURBATION MAY
May has cum: International Masturbation Month is here.
May 1 marks the first day of Masturbation Month also known as National and International Masturbation Month. If you didn't know about this holiday, you’re not alone. The annual observance isn't as high profile as other sexual celebrations, but we at JOYTOYZ store are out to change that.
HOW IT STARTED
Masturbation Month started in 1995 as a response to the forced resignation of U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders in December 1994. After a speech at the UN World AIDS Day in, an audience member asked Elders about masturbation’s potential for discouraging early sexual activity. She answered, “I think it is something that is part of human sexuality and a part of something that perhaps should be taught.”
That marked the end of the first black Surgeon General’s Washington career, but the beginning of National Masturbation Month. The founders of San Francisco-based sex shop Good Vibrations said, "Enough is enough!" They wanted to do two things: keep up the conversation about Elders firing and make people talk about masturbation.
Good Vibrations recognized many people needed support and advice regarding self love. For so long, shame and stigma have been attached to masturbating. Yet the truth is it is a part of human sexuality that is natural, pleasurable, and healthy. It is said "ninety-eight percent of us masturbate" and the other two percent are liars.
So go ahead, don't be afraid to get to know yourself a little more intimately to celebrate Masturbation Month!
How you want to masturbate is up to you, and there is no wrong way to do it. If I do offer any advice, I would suggest to proceed with caution when it comes to putting things in your body. If you’d like more information on body safety, check out our article on how to choose a safe sex toy.
You also absolutely do not have to use toys to masturbate (although a vibe could change your life, just sayin’). Evolution gave us the hands, the most versatile bio-tool around.
MAKE IT SPECIAL
If you typically rush through your self-pleasure, make sure you’re in a comfortable environment with no distractions and with little possibility of interruption. Play some music, spread some flower petals, read an erotic novel, take a relaxing bath — it doesn’t matter how, but do something to honor the time and space. I’ve discovered that when I make masturbation a special part of my day and self-care, rather than just a perfunctory, compulsory body function, it has positive effects that ripple out into my life, well beyond just sexual gratification.
Masturbation is nothing to be ashamed of. If you don’t do it, that’s fine. If you do, that’s fine, too! Do whatever makes your body feel good. It’s natural, common and a great, practical form of self-love.
Let’s celebrate masturbation!
